Who we are
We’re a purpose-driven team of experts dedicated to improving justice, policing and public safety. We do this through:
Our in-house think tank which does the hard thinking on crime and justice reform, publishing robust and independent research in timely, accessible reports.
Our consulting practice which quantifies complex problems, devises strategies and transforms services for clients across policing, the criminal justice system, and local or central government.
Our inquiries and reviews practice which provides specialist support to public inquiries and independent reviews examining incidents and issues across justice, public safety, health and social care, sport and other sectors.
Our team identifies and helps solve complex problems arising from crime, vulnerability and other social harms. We’re subject matter experts, and many of us have previously worked at the organisations and in the sectors we now serve. We bring expertise, real-world experience and a powerful sense of purpose to our mission - to make communities safer.
About the role
The Lead Quantitative Analyst is a newly introduced role at Crest Advisory, created to support the growth of our data analytics services for clients in the justice, policing, and public safety sectors. This position will work closely with the Head of Analytics to build capacity, capability, and resilience within the analytics team, ensuring Crest consistently delivers clear, actionable insights based on quantitative data. As a specialist role, the Lead Quantitative Analyst is focussed on two key areas - a substantial internal focus on strengthening team capabilities and processes, and an external focus on client delivery work that involves presenting findings to clients and addressing their questions to clarify and deepen the impact of our work.
You will take the lead on quantitative elements within client projects, line-manage quantitative analysts, and drive the professional development of the wider team, while also contributing to Crest’s business development initiatives. This role requires in-office presence three days a week, allowing for close collaboration to maintain the high standards that Crest is known for.
Key responsibilities include:
Project Leadership: Lead the quantitative aspects of client projects, ensuring statistical rigour and actionable insights. Present findings to clients and provide clear answers to their queries.
Team Development: Train and mentor analysts in advanced statistical methods, helping the team build confidence and technical skills in quantitative analysis.
Process Efficiency: Streamline workflows, automate reporting, and create efficient data processes to maximise the team’s productivity.
Quality Assurance: Ensure all quantitative work meets Crest’s standards for reliability and credibility, providing guidance and oversight on project methodologies.
Business Development: Shape proposals and write bids, ensuring robust quantitative methods are designed within project budgets and timeframes.
Essential skills:
Advanced quantitative analysis skills with a deep understanding of statistical modelling. An understanding of criminal justice and public policy data.
Proficiency in R and experience training team members in statistical techniques.
Strong communication skills for explaining complex concepts to senior stakeholders in a clear, accessible way.
Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines, with a talent for supporting and developing junior team members.
Crest offers the opportunity to be involved with a vast range of interesting projects across the justice system. Some of our most recent quantitative projects include:
Using spatial and temporal analytical techniques to identify why a police force in England and Wales had become an outlier for homicide in recent years and understand what actions could be taken to reduce homicide levels.
Working with the Cleveland Unit for the Reduction of Violence (CURV) as their research and evaluation partner, helping them to evaluate locally-delivered interventions and conduct research such as our problem profile on night-time economy violence.
A process and impact evaluation of the Crown Prosecution Service’s Victim Transformation Programme which is intended to improve victim engagement across the criminal justice process. Working with both national and regional CPS teams, victim advocacy groups, and other criminal justice partners, we are supporting the CPS to robustly quantify their impact and iterate the programme to deliver better outcomes for victims of crime.
Identifying neighbourhoods across Britain where community crimes go unresolved, to inform Channel 4 Dispatches documentary ‘Britain's unsolved crimewave’ (July 2024)
