We particularly invite those individuals with lived experience of crime or the criminal justice system to apply.

Who we are

We’re a purpose-driven team of experts dedicated to improving justice, policing and public safety. We do this through:

  • Our in-house think tank which does the hard thinking on crime and justice reform, publishing robust and independent research in timely, accessible reports.

  • Our consulting practice which quantifies complex problems, devises strategies and transforms services for clients across policing, the criminal justice system, and local or central government.

  • Our inquiries and reviews practice which provides specialist support to public inquiries and independent reviews examining incidents and issues across justice, public safety, health and social care, sport and other sectors.

Our team identifies and helps solve complex problems arising from crime, vulnerability and other social harms. We’re subject matter experts, and many of us have previously worked at the organisations and in the sectors we now serve. We bring expertise, real-world experience and a powerful sense of purpose to our mission - to make communities safer.

About the role

The Project Officer role is being newly introduced to Crest to support our Heads of Service roles with delivering their portfolios of work. Working together with Project Managers the role will support the coordination and smooth running of projects.

Up to four project officers will be recruited with the ambition of driving consistency across our portfolios of work in terms of project and contract management. This is an exciting opportunity to work within project teams, but also as a team of project officers to develop and implement new approaches across the business and benefit from peer support.

The role will be trialled on a fixed term basis initially for one year, with the possibility for extension.

The role will support the planning, delivery, monitoring and evaluation of a wide range of high profile and complex projects by:

  • Working with finance and procurement colleagues to ensure all necessary agreements and paperwork are in place for each project (contract, purchase order, invoicing schedule etc)

  • Working with the senior management team to develop a resourcing plan for each project that meets the skill profile required and fits the project budget;

  • Supporting project managers by preparing for internal and external project kick offs;

  • Ensure paperwork and contractual arrangements are in place for third parties, associates and subcontractors working on projects;

  • Building project infrastructure, then updating and maintaining project documentation across a suite of software throughout the duration of the project;

  • Supporting the scheduling of engagement with key project stakeholders for the largest projects;

  • Reporting on project progress, budget and resources to the Project Manager, Senior Responsible Officer and Senior Management Team;

  • Supporting effective client and stakeholder management through the provision of contract and progress reports suitable for external sharing and organising meetings and setting agendas;

  • Identifying and sharing project delivery risks, and contributing to issue resolution

This role will be a key part of the successful delivery of Crest Advisory’s project work for clients across the Criminal Justice System. The role will benefit from extensive exposure to the Senior Management Team in day to day work, supporting the delivery of individual projects as well as providing business intelligence to the Directors to support the management of  the organisation’s portfolio as a whole. The Project Officer role will be expected to contribute to Crest’s on-going transformation programme - focussed on improving the efficiency and effectiveness of internal project delivery (and wider processes).

We are interested in hearing from both long-term experienced project officers and those early in their careers with a passion for collaborative project delivery and an eye for detail.

Crest offers the opportunity to be involved with a vast range of interesting projects across the justice system. Some of our most recent projects include:

  • implementing a flagship Home Office policy to reduce serious violence across England and Wales by providing advisory services to all 43 police force areas, testing their readiness to support the serious violence duty and providing support to local agencies to improve this where required.

  • the design of a new operating model for the Crown Prosecution Service as part of their 5 year Victims Transformation Programme aimed at improving victim experiences with the CPS for in excess of 420,000 prosecutions a year and contributing to a better experience across the criminal justice system

  • developing for the National Police Chiefs Council the new 4Ps strategy (Protect, Pursue, Prevent, Prepare) to help forces consistently tackle violence against women and girls (VAWG) and conducting for the College of Policing the first national analysis of the threat VAWG poses to public safety

  • providing unique new analysis of police data to identify neighbourhoods across Britain where crimes are never solved to inform Channel 4 Dispatches documentary ‘Britain's unsolved crimewave’ (July 2024)
